Anxiety & Panic Attacks Calming the Nervous System Through Breathing
At Suffolk Breathing Coach, I use functional techniques based on the Buteyko method to support people whose anxiety and panic symptoms are influenced or worsened by breathing habits. Breathing retraining does not replace medical or therapeutic care, but it can be a valuable tool alongside existing treatment — helping you feel more grounded, more in control, and less at the mercy of your symptoms.
How breathing affects Anxiety & Panic
Anxiety and panic are not purely psychological disorders. There is a strong physiological connection — fast, shallow breathing lowers CO2 levels in the blood, which can trigger dizziness, light-headedness, and a sense of losing control. This in turn escalates the anxiety response, creating a cycle that feels very difficult to break. For many people, the breathing pattern itself is quietly driving the panic loop, often without them realising it.
How Buteyko helps
Slower, nasal, controlled breathing calms the nervous system and reduces air hunger — interrupting the panic loop at its physiological root. The Buteyko method is highly effective at rebalancing this response. By training calmer, lighter breathing as a default, the nervous system becomes less reactive over time. Clients report feeling more grounded, less overwhelmed, and better able to manage stressful situations as breathing efficiency improves.
